Landing your first (or next) associate role is a big step. But not all opportunities are equal. A role that looks great on paper may not offer what you truly need to grow. Here’s how to evaluate your options effectively.
Clinical Autonomy
Do you have freedom in how you treat patients, or will the clinic require strict adherence to a particular protocol? Ideally, look for:
- Flexible treatment planning
- Support for using your preferred techniques
- Open communication with the lead chiropractor
Patient Volume Expectations
Understand what your typical day will look like. Are you seeing:
- 15–25 patients per day (more one-on-one care)?
- 50+ patients per day (high volume, quick visits)?
Know your pace preferences—burnout is real.
Mentorship and Professional Growth
Especially if you're a recent grad, you’ll benefit from guidance. Ask:
- Will I shadow or be mentored?
- Are there weekly case reviews or technique workshops?
- What support is there for CEU and licensure?
Compensation and Incentives
Evaluate not just base pay, but the full compensation package:
- Commission structure
- Bonus thresholds
- Buy-in or profit-sharing potential
- Paid time off, insurance, and retirement options
Contract Transparency
Have an attorney review any contract. Watch for:
- Restrictive non-compete clauses
- “Training periods” with low pay
- Vague language around expectations or schedules
Location and Lifestyle Alignment
Consider commute, cost of living, and work-life balance. Also look at:
- Demographics and market demand in the area
- Nearby gyms, yoga studios, and wellness centers
- How the community fits your personal interests
A great job should support your professional and personal goals.
